Nautical Astrolabe

The word astrolabe is a Greek–Arabic hybrid. In Greek, astron means star and labê derives from the verb lambanein which means to take, i.e. to navigate “taking” the position of the stars, gauging the angle/position of the sun and other stars against the horizon.

Astronomical instrument of Greek origin and improved by the Arabs to be used in the navigation on the high seas. It arrived to the Iberian Peninsula by the hands of the Arabs in the 13th century and was widely used till the end of the 17th century.

Our ancestors, the Portuguese Navigators used the astrolabe to discover new sea routes and new continents and just like our ancestors, we will be the explorers that will help you to discover a Portugal full of culture and tradition.
