Nautical Astrolabe

The word astrolabe is a Greek–Arabic hybrid. In Greek, astron means star and labê derives from the verb lambanein which means to take, i.e. to navigate “taking” the position of the stars, gauging the angle/position of the sun and other stars against the horizon.
Astronomical instrument of Greek origin and improved by the Arabs to be used in the navigation on the high seas. It arrived to the Iberian Peninsula by the hands of the Arabs in the 13th century and was widely used till the end of the 17th century.
